Team Rocket had a momentary edge in Granite Cave, which meant they'd sent in some grunts to pull guard duty and keep anyone in the League from slipping through the dimensional rift. Unfortunately, Ruby was one of those grunts. It wasn't all bad, she guessed as she leaned against the wall, holding the end of her nail bat against the floor. It was the closest thing she'd gotten to a break in a while, and if someone tried to come through, she could fight them off.

[break][break]Especially since they'd be slowed and weakened by the Sticky Thread and Toxic Spikes her Spinarak and Drapion had left at the entrance.

[break][break]For now, all she could do was wait and see if someone would stumble into her little trap, much like a spider waiting for her prey.

THE LAST THING SERGEI THOUGHT HE WOULD DO when he accepted this mission is to do things alone. When his companions have managed to find a way to get through, Sergei was stuck at the cavern entrance with no choice but to fend for himself. Thankfully, despite the overwhelming number of Rocket members he was warned of to be guarding the premises, there is only one he will be facing off right now.

The tricky part, however, is that Valerio does not know the grunt's full potential yet. Sanguine leans closely as Sergei relays his initial strategy.

"Do you think you can go to the other side?" At least all dreepies are ghost-types. He can find a way to be a little bit sneaky. "Find out if the grunt has more backup; otherwise, we can be a little more aggressive than usual."

His fingers gripping onto Valiant's pokeball, waiting for any moment that he might immediately require the assistance of his ace.

Ruby didn't seem to notice Sergei as he made plans with his Dreepy. If Sanguine could avoid the trap that Ruby had set, he would find that any backup was guarding different entrances. It seemed that, at least for now, Rocket's forces here were spread thin.

[break][break]Not that Ruby thought she needed backup. She figured that any League member worth their salt would just be able to teleport into the Ultra Deep Sea, so anyone who tried to storm the rift on foot was weak, an idiot, or both. Heck, the only Pokémon she had out was Jorogumo, who'd insisted on staying at the edge of the web she'd spun. It was like her second nervous system, after all; the moment anyone or anything touched it, she would know, and that would serve as Ruby's alarm system.

[break][break]Ruby wasn't usually the patient, planning type, but she was pretty damn proud of what she'd put together. Too bad she hadn't accounted for a Pokémon that could go around it.

[break][break]She was tempted to light a cigarette. Even though she'd been trying to quit (or, at least, that was the excuse she'd been making for months), it'd be something to do, at least. Guard duty was boring.

Unfortunately, Sanguine's INFILTRATOR is not unbounded by its own capabilities. Sergei knows the infant dragon is still in his early months of training and he cannot always rely on the dreepy for very critical responsibilities. The ghost dragon loses his phantom as he passes through a seemingly invisible interconnection of webs, intriciately spunned that any attempt at escaping leads to paper thin cuts; the sticky web strategically immobilizes him as he gets knocked down into a bed of toxic spikes.

"Sanguine!" Any attempt at being careful and sneaky is now lost; Sergei cares too much for his Pokemons. From his hand, he sends out Valiant to summon a VEIL OF SAND, washing out any more venomous hurdles on its way to save the baby dragon. "Hang in there, we'll get you quick!"

Jorogumo didn't even need to sound the alarm when the Dreepy was caught in her web. Its trainer announced his presence by shouting the little thing's name. Ruby swung her light in the voice's direction and saw the entangled Dreepy, a trainer she didn't recognize, and... oh, that Garchomp could be a problem.

[break][break]"Who the hell are you?!" she shouted at the stranger. Without waiting for an answer, she tossed out a Net Ball, releasing her Frosmoth. Jorogumo hissed and crawled over to the Dreepy to stand over her threateningly.

The queen of the web is quick to reach into her prey. Sanguine can only look at it with fear as he scrambles to get out of the trap. "You can do it, boy. Get over here!"

The dreepy is determined: he forces himself a quick attack QUICK ATTACK. The attempt frees him from his shackles easily, thanks to Valiant's previous help, and then launches himself towards the spider. The garchomp acts as a support: the sands collected on the ground gathers toward the spinarak in order to trap it in retaliation (SAND TOMB).

With much confidence now that his team is working in tandem, Sergei finally addresses the rocket grunt. "Why'd you wanna know?"

Jorogumo screeched in surprise and pain when the Dreepy Quick Attacked into her. The sand on the ground gathered in a Sand Tomb to trap her, turning that surprise into chittering anger.

[break][break]"Teng, Ice Beam the Garchomp!" Ruby shouted. "Gumo, Shadow Sneak!" It wasn't exactly sneaky when the command was being shouted like that, but subtlety had long since flown out the window.

[break][break]Icy blue light gathered in the gem on Tengliu's forehead. The Frosmoth dipped forward, little arms held open for balance in a way that almost made her look like she was bowing, and shot the beam of ice at the Garchomp. Meanwhile, Jorogumo hissed, and her shadow extended toward the Dreepy and launched itself upward in a burst of Ghost-type energy.

[break][break]Her opponent's question actually caught her off guard. "The fuck kind of question...? Whatever. What are you doing here? If you're trying to get to the rift, you'll have to get through us first!"

While it seems that he and his team is finally having their way, the enemy decides to play with the traditional, obvious type-advantages card in which Sergei and his partners are not prepared to face yet. Plus, dodging all these attacks in a very close battle seems too impossible for both Valiant and Sanguine right now.

"Dodge, you guys!" Garchomp's reflexes are great, but the dragon only narrowly dodges the attack and the ice beam has totally frozen over its leg. Sanguine, however, is not too lucky. The dreepy is too close to his attacker and the shadow sneak is a surprise move that he totally did not see coming. The baby dragon is easily knocked out, leaving Sergei no other choice but to summon his other baby dragon.

"Val, get rid of the ice first. Commander Wise got this." Garchomp then proceeds to use DRAGON BREATH to melt the freeze down as he lets the sushi dragon take the lead.

"Not if we keep you very occupied, miss!" His snarky remark is the queue for Commander Wise to send down a tsunami of MUDDY WATER to their enemies. Water starts to seep out from the ground, clumping together as they form a huge puddle of muddy liquid. And when the wave is high enough, he throws a POISON BARB into the water like a javelin, hoping to hit at least one of them. "You will never catch us!"

Not quite the result Ruby had been hoping for, but the baby dragon was down, and the big one would be occupied for a while. Unfortunately, the close quarters immediately came back to bite Ruby in the ass when the man's Tatsugiri sent a tsunami of Muddy Water their way.

[break][break]"Shit!" Ruby shouted as she covered her face with her arms. Her Pokémon took the brunt of the move, but she'd be scrubbing mud out of her clothes after this. Poor Jorogumo was washed right out of her web and forced to the ground, dazed. She was in no condition to fight after that onslaught. Ruby bit back the urge to tell her she'd done well and returned her to her Net Ball. She had to stay tough out here; she could praise her Pokémon later.

[break][break]Tengliu let out a weak, pained squeak that had Ruby whipping her head toward the Frosmoth. That hit shouldn't have done that much damage, right? But then she saw the dark, purplish flush on her face and the Poison Barb lying on the ground nearby.

[break][break]"Oh, you sneaky bastard."

[break][break]She wasn't going to take that lying down. In a flash of light, Skorpios the Drapion appeared on the field, his size making him a decent wall in these tight corridors. "Thunder Fang that fish!" she commanded, not realizing it was half-Dragon type. Skorpios roared, summoning sparks around his fangs, and rushed forward to deliver the bite to Commander Wise.

[break][break]"Tengliu..." She couldn't believe she was doing this. "Attract."

[break][break]The Frosmoth's eyes flickered with mischief. She fluttered over to Valiant, deliberately making her flight unsteady to play up just how badly she'd been hurt by Commander Wise's attack and Sergei's Poison Barb. She looked straight into Valiant's eyes pleadingly. How could he allow his teammate to hurt a lady such as herself? Surely he wouldn't stand for this injustice, right...?

It seems Sergei's team will not easily get away when the grunt summons her remaining pokemon, drapion. Good thing for them, Commander Wise is quick to retaliate when her trainer senses what is about to happen and commands her in a haste. "SOAK that guy before it hits you!"

Tatsugiri's dragon-typing will not just momentarily save it from exhaustion, but also its strategy as well. Any time now that the drapion's electric fangs reaches the sushi dragon, a splash of water will come its way, hoping to get it electrocuted as well.

Valiant, however, is bound to suffer a different fate. When Tengliu the frosmoth decides its best to incapacitate his ace with attraction, Sergei instantly knew the garchomp is a lost cause. The thing is, even Sergei will be attracted to the frosmoth if it uses the move on him--it is a very beautiful Pokemon!

"Val, out with it!" But that remark only made the dragon frustrated and angry. The last bits of ice have finally melted on its legs, and now his garchomp, out of annoyance, decides it is best to use DRAGON BREATH at his trainer. "Oh, shit."

Sergei runs away as he is continually assaulted by his Valiant like a straight, out-of-sitcom sequence, scrambling to get Valiant's ball out to put away his 'madly in-love' dragon.

"I didn't quite expect that." He admits to Ruby Garcia. "But I still have a few tricks up my sleeve, if you must know."

The last of the artifacts in his pockets, a MYSTERIOUS ORE he oughts to use in case of a real, compelling emergency. This is indeed an emergency, he thinks, I don't even know if this Rocket is capable of killing and I don't want my first month in Hoenn being six feet below the ground. Lifting the earthen crystal and smashing it onto the ground suddenly creates a tremor, and then a sudden movement in the plates as the broken pieces of the ore summon stalagmites and crystals jutting out of the ground. Sergei needs one final distraction to get his shit done: after all, he did not come here to fight but to get back with his colleagues.

Oh, boo-hoo, Skorpios was gonna get a little soaked before he could get his attack off. What the hell was this guy thinking?

[break][break]Oh. Apparently, he was thinking that the water would cause Skorpios's own attack to hit not just his opponent, but him, as well. For super-effective damage. Goddammit, this guy was too clever for his own good. With a frustrated roar, Skorpios instinctively skittered back, furiously swiping at the water on his body.

[break][break]Ruby's opinion went right out the window when Sergei tried to snap his Garchomp out of his attraction, only to get chased around like some cartoon character. Tengliu made a tittering, squeaky sound that might have been a laugh. Ruby grinned and put one hand on her hip to watch this little show before Valiant was forced back into his Poké Ball.

[break][break]"Bring it," Ruby taunted, hoisting her neglected bat over her shoulder. Skorpios had snapped out of the daze caused by his attack backfiring, and he growled while Tengliu did a mid-air twirl.

[break][break]Sergei reached into his pocket, and Ruby immediately prepared to cover her face with her arm. She'd dealt with enough flashbangs and gas pellets and crap today. But instead of either of those, Sergei pulled out... some kind of crystal? Ruby only remembered what it was after he'd smashed it into the ground. She and her Pokémon stepped and flew back from the huge stalagmites and crystals that jutted out of the ground.

[break][break]"Crap," Ruby muttered. "Skorpios, can you break these?"

[break][break]Eager for a chance to show off his strength, Skorpios grabbed one of the stalagmites in his claws and pulled on it. The sound of crumbling and cracking rock showed he was having at least some luck, but Ruby wasn't just going to stand there and wait. She looked for a gap to squeeze through. Even Tengliu seemed to be having a bit of trouble getting through the difficult terrain.

The thing with mysterious ores is that they are so mysterious, Sergei cannot even fathom how they work. While the drapion attempts to break through the earthen hurdles that have sprung out of the ground because of the crystal's effects, more and more stalactites grow to deter them from catching up. They would have noticed that the obstacles will falter in time quickly, just enough so Sergei can figure out how to get out of the grunt's sight fastly.

With only Commander Wise on his side of the battlefield, the dragon trainer then instructs it with MUDDY WATER, with Sergei and the tatsugiri attempting to ride the wave out. It doesn't matter if Ruby Garcia 's drapion succeeds: at least until they are gone by the time they are finished.
